L2

Line 2, shortened to L2 and coloured purple is a metro line in Barcelona operated by TMB. It's part of the city's ATM fare-integrated transport network. As for its architecture, it's not too different from older Barcelona Metro lines when it comes to the network's trademark sobriety and lack of ornament, but is noticeably more illuminated and incorporates some more modern architectural principles —as it was built in the 1990s— and its stations feature some unique designs. As of 2010, its termini are Paraŀlel, in the Sants-Montjuïc district, and Badalona Pompeu Fabra, in Badalona. It's going to be extended southbound into Montjuïc and into Fira station, and from this station this line will share the same route and tunnel of line 9 to the Barcelona Airport.

Overview

Although its construction started in the 1950s (as line II, now part of line 5), initially running from La Sagrera to Vilapicina station, with Horta added in 1967, the current L2 wasn't open until 1995, three years after the 1992 Summer Olympics, the event the line was supposed to be already open for, which makes it the second newest metro line in the network (after line 11). All of its stations are underground.

By 2020 Line 2 is expected to be extended to El Prat Airport providing it with metro coverage to the Barcelona city centre making it the second metro line to serve El Prat Airport after Line 9 which was extended to the airport in 2016. The two lines shared the same route from Aeroport T1 until Fira.
